Dating in the twenty-first century has considerably evolved since the decades before and especially after a global pandemic. There’s a daunting, negative message around dating these days. Now, it’s rarely the case to randomly meet someone at a bar, marry a high school sweetheart, or meet through mutual friends. Dating has become an elusive concept—hard to make connections and even harder to maintain them. Not only does this complicate the dating experience, but the belief in love and commitment has been heavily impacted by the cultural messages around independence and self-love. Therefore, the moves made in dating and expectations around: commitment, communication, and sex have shifted. These changes can leave people feeling hopeless, uncertain, and emotionally barren. Learning what current research says about dating in the twenty-first century and joining others in the discussion can help assuage any doubts, fears, and misconceptions in one’s romantic endeavors.
