Reduce conflict and rekindle the flame of connection in your relationship.

We all long to feel loved and accepted by our partners with the confidence of knowing they will be there to nurture and comfort us in times of distress.  All couples will inevitably face challenges in their relationship, but when partners are securely connected they are better prepared to cope with conflict and manage stress in and outside of the relationship.

Couple's who feel disconnected from their partner or trapped in unending cycles of conflict and misunderstandings experience intense despair and feelings of isolation in their relationship.  Couples experiencing relationship distress, often wait years before seeking help through couple's therapy.  Over time, negative cycles of interaction become entrenched, resentment builds, and the emotional distance between partners grows when problems are not dealt with.

Couple's therapy can offer you and your partner the opportunity to avoid years of pain while you wait for problems to resolve naturally.  Therapy can also help you and your partner to understand and escape negative patterns of conflict that keep both locked in distress and isolation.

As an emotionally focused therapist we will collaborate with you to gain insight into what you truly need from one another.  These unmet needs are what fuels reactive behaviors and cycles of negative conflict.  By learning to recognize these habitual patters of reacting you will be empowered to exit these negative conflict cycles and rebuild the emotional connection in your relationship.  Research has consistently shown that emotionally focused therapy (EFT) helps 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery with 90% reporting significant improvements in their relationship.  Click below to download a research summary on the effectiveness of EFT.

We also integrate communication and relationship enhancement skills into all couple's services based on research of John Gottman as a supplement to the wisdom of the EFT approach.   For couples who wish to focus on improving communication I also offer Relationship Coaching for Couples, a Communication and Underlying Needs Assessment based on the EFT approach, and the Gottman Relationship Checkup as stand-alone services to gain insight and guidance for skill development or as part of relationship coaching packages or intensives.
For information on the services I offer for couples with a bipolar diagnosed partner visit BipolarCouples.com.

For partners questioning whether to stay in their relationship I also offer discernment counseling, the goal of which is to help partner gain greater clarity and confidence in making decisions about the future of their relationship.  Discernment counseling can also be a useful tool to help partners decide if couple's therapy might help to address the problems in their relationship.
